How to hang a picture?

I have a cross that I'd like to hang over the door in my kitchen. What is the best way to do this? I have never done this before. Do I need a drill? How can I make sure it is centered and even? The hanging hook on the back of the cross sort of looks like "teeth" - you know, the ones with the jagged edges. Is there something special I will need to hang this?
