Dying grass...Help!!???

We moved into our house last winter, and the grass looks terrible. Sod was laid in the front yard probably 2 years ago...but it looks dead and is full of weeds. The back yard has HUGE dead spots. This spring we put seed down on the dead spots and nothing grew. Is it time to call in professional help, or are there things we can do? Someone mentioned using gypsum on the yard?? HELP!!!
