I would probably suggest forgetting the early morning watering and only water after the sun goes down. Set a pot or similar container on the lawn and see how much water is actually going into the soil. You probably don't need more than an inch, but I'm not sure. My dad's theory about lawn watering was that if you keep it watered, the roots are going to stay close to the soil surface, knowing you'll keep them watered. If you aren't quite so kind, the roots will dig down to where they'll probably find enough moisture to satisfy their needs. That said, in most parts of the country, the grass is always going to turn brown to some extent, unless you water it five times a day. Just let it be somewhat brown for a couple of months. It won't die. Better than wasting water.
