Default Which is the best type of mulch to use in a perennial bed?

I'm trying to decide between cedar, cypress, pine, and any other hardwood mulch. I do not have access to shredded leaves, and I do not want rock mulch.

The perennial bed will have a path through it, so I'm looking for a mulch that can hold up to some foot traffic, and not get spread all over the patio. The area is approximately 12'x12'.

What should I use?
