Default Sump Pump Adjustments

Hello,

Pump fails more than it operates. The float doesn't rise far enough to activate the switch.

I've: replaced the switch
made sure the pump float is vertical
made sure that float rides cleanly on the guide
removed grime from the float (added weight.)
added a sealed 4 ounce plastic bottle, empty, to the float that worked for
a while.

I'm stumped. The float is a cylinder about 7" long and the guide runs through the middle of it. Do these things absorb moisture over the years? This system may be 35 years old. The pump runs great.

Thanks for the help.

Sam
