We are in the shopping phase of remodeling our home. This will be my first time gathering estimates for remodeling and I’m hoping that the good people on Yahoo and answers could aide in my shopping and estimate phase.

Here’s what I need:

What should my estimate encompass? So far one contractor sent me an excel spreadsheet with the breakdown of the work we discussed during his walk thru.
However, he estimated the cost per room for what we requested but there is no breakdown between estimated cost of supplies vs. Labor.

Will this come later in the process or should I know this up front. Everyone is telling me that his prices are good and he’s coming from a personal referral. However, I’m not sure what I should be asking for and at what stage.

Ps. I know that at some point we will get together and choose the exact items that I want and I’m sure I’ll see receipts, but should I be expecting such a breakdown at this early stage?
