Default Remodeling Home Stairs, Narrow Treads?

Hi - I'm thinking of buying a home but the stairs are a little concerning. The treads are about 8 inches deep, and they should be about 10 or 11. So, I'm thinking of making the stairs have a landing, turn 90 or 180 degrees and then finish. This would mean I could make the treads deeper, or so I would think. Could an architect or a contractor let me know if, generally speaking, a straight/steep staircase can be remedied with a landing? What are the costs? Will I lose a lot of room? What are all my options? Bottom line, is it almost always an option in a 2 story colonial, built in 1987?
