I have recantly started renovating my kitchen and ran into a little gem of a problem.

The previous owner built a really weak supporting wall on an addition and i wish to modify it so it becomes safe.

i want to span 15 feet using as small of a beam as possible.

what type of material is recommended for a span this size (i am thinking steel "I" beam).

this beam will only be supported on either end.

I wish to obtain a maximum of 6" of height for the beam but i think that isn't possible.

any help would be appreciated!

Yes, a steal I beam sounds about right for the size you have quoted.
